How hard is the ISSA CPT?
Facts checked on against ISSA's FAQ and course page. Page updated .
This is our view, written by a student in the course. CPT Trainer is an independent study tool. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by ISSA or NCCPT. ISSA is a trademark of its owner.
The honest answer: ISSA's own course exam is not hard to sit, because it is open note, untimed and unproctored. The course is harder than the exam. There is a lot of vocabulary, much of it science, and the questions ask you to apply it to a client. Kept up as you go, it is manageable. If you leave it all to the end, up to 200 questions with your notes open becomes a long, slow grind.
What you need to pass

What makes it harder than it looks
The amount of vocabulary
The course glossary defines 602 terms across 10 modules, from fitness history to nutrition, behavior change and the business of training. Open note helps only if you know which word to look up. A question that names a client's problem in plain words, without the term, is where people lose time.
The science modules
For many students the hardest stretch is the anatomy and physiology: body systems, energy systems, muscles and joint actions. It is new language, and it builds on itself. Module 2 and Module 3 are worth extra time, because later modules lean on them.
Look-alike terms
Many wrong answers are a near miss: the right family, the wrong member. Agonist or synergist, NEAT or EAT, change talk or sustain talk. Each module page lists the pairs students mix up and the one detail that separates them.
Applying, not reciting
Knowing a definition is not the same as spotting it in a scenario. A question may describe a client, an exercise or a conversation and ask what is going on. That is a skill you build by answering scenario questions, not by re-reading.

How long it takes
ISSA's course page says you can become certified in as little as 3 months, and the FAQ gives 6 months to finish. We do not have a number of our own, because it depends on your week. As arithmetic: the course has 50 lessons, so finishing in 6 months means about two lessons a week, and in 3 months about four.
A steady pace beats a fast one. Short daily sessions, with reviews spread over weeks, hold up much better at exam time than a cram in the last fortnight. Our study method sets out a plan.
How your background changes it
- New to fitness and science: expect the anatomy and physiology to take the longest. Learn the terms lesson by lesson and do not move on with a pile of words you cannot explain.
- Regular gym-goer: the exercises will feel familiar, but the course uses precise names for muscle roles, joint actions and planes of motion. Gym habits can mislead you here, so check your instincts against the course's terms.
- Exercise science or kinesiology student: the science will be review. The coaching, behavior change and business modules may be the newer part.
- Working full time: the 6-month window is usually enough if you study a little most days. The risk is falling behind and trying to catch up all at once.
The NCCPT exam is harder
If you choose the NCCPT exam instead, the difficulty changes. It is closed book, two hours long and proctored. NCCPT's April 2026 manual reports that 734 of 1,095 candidates passed in 2025, so about a third did not. Details are in our exam guide.
